It all starts....
How it all started
This is a urine stick. Yes, its a stick you pee on. Do you see that little blue square on the right? If you pee on this stick and the square turns brown, it indicates that sugar is in your urine. Yup, you read that right, it means that your body is removing the excess sugar in the body.
Dehydration and DKA
When the stick turned brown, I was told to take my 4yr old daughter directly to the ER. IV, fluids, blood work, urine analysis.....tests tests and more tests.
My own mini pharmacy
I didn't fully appreciate what it takes for a diabetic to control their blood sugar. Needles, lancets, test strips, glucometer, bolus insulin, basal insulin, glucagon, syringes, pens, dex tabs....
What is Type 1 Diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, called beta cells. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved. Its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D, and—at present—nothing you can do to get rid of it.
